Our new event celebrating spring and Nebraska Bird Month! The weekend will be filled with programs, presentations, walks, and talks for all ages, including special evening programs for adults sponsored by Blue Blood Brewery with brews to taste. This event is in partnership with Nebraska Statewide Arboretum and is sponsored by KZUM FM and Blue Blood Brewery. Plan now to join in the fun.
All programs are free but donations are welcome.

SATURDAY, MAY 20
- BIRDING BY EAR WORKSHOP, Saturday, May 20 - 8:00 am
Have you ever wondered which bird is singing or what they might be saying? Join Jason “the Birdnerd” St. Sauver for this fun and informal workshop and bird walk to learn just that!
- KIDS’ BIRDING!, Saturday, May 20 - 10:30 am
Looking for a great way to enjoy the outdoors with the youngsters? Birding is a great activity for all ages, but especially for kids. Take part in this family-friendly guided bird walk, where kids will learn the basics of bird identification and habitat importance, all while enjoying a lovely morning on the trails through the tallgrass prairie. Binoculars will be available.
- PLANTS 4 BIRDS: Grasses & Grassland Birds Walk & Picnic, Saturday, May 20 - 12:00 noon
Bring your picnic lunch and stroll through the prairie with experts Kay Kottas and Jason “the Birdnerd” St. Sauver learning about the important prairie grasses and the grassland birds that depend on them.
- Wildflowers & Wildcrafting, Saturday, May 20 - 2:00 pm
Bob Henrickson, an expert from the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, will lead a walk and talk about wildflowers, including edible prairie plants, and will teach how to identify and harvest the plants.
- Plants & Pollinators, Saturday, May 20 - 4:00 pm
Join staff and students from the University of Nebraska to learn about and search for our amazing pollinators on the prairie – from native bees and flies to butterflies, dragonflies, and more.
- OWL You’ve Ever Wanted to Know!, Saturday, May 20 - 7:00 pm
Would you enjoy pub trivia and beer tasting in a lovely prairie setting? Have we got the program for you! Our friends from Pioneers Park Nature Center will be bringing a live owl to help us learn, and we’ll have some great trivia about owls and birds all night with prizes and brews provided by Lincoln’s Blue Blood Brewery! This program is BYOB, participants are welcome to bring their own drinks.
SUNDAY, MAY 21
- BIOBLITZ & BRUNCH!, Sunday, May 21 - 10:00 am
Join a team and enjoy the wackiness that is BIOBLITZ! You’ll be teamed up with a local expert to be on a bird or bug or plant team to search Spring Creek Prairie for as many species as you can find. It’s fun. It’s fast. AND, it comes with home-cooked brunch at the end!
- Feathered Friends & Families, Sunday, May 21 - 1:00 pm
This family-fun bird walk will focus on birds, their amazing feathery adaptations, and how they create and maintain families during spring in Nebraska. Led by Jason “the Birdnerd” St. Sauver.
- Woodlands & Wetlands Walk, Sunday, May 21 - 2:30 pm
Tag along with experts from both Spring Creek Prairie & the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum for a walk through the wetlands and woodlands of Spring Creek Prairie, learning about trees, shrubs, and wildflowers in our beautiful non-prairie areas.
- BIRDS, BARK, & BREWS!, Sunday, May 21 - 4:30 pm
Justin Evertson, an expert from the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, will lead a stroll around Van Dorn Park, teaching about the trees and birds in the area, ending up at Blue Blood Brewery for some delicious brews and eats. * NOTE: This program does NOT take place at Spring Creek Prairie; gather at Van Dorn Park’s parking lot at 9th and Van Dorn streets.
- How NOT to take a Bird Photo, Sunday, May 21 - 7:00 pm
Join wildlife photographer Nick Manes of Manes Media for a fun evening learning all the DON'Ts of taking pictures of birds and other wildlife in natural settings, while enjoying a tasting of delicious brew provided by Blue Blood Brewery! This program is BYOB, participants are welcome to bring their own drinks.
